Guest Post: Best Biking Trails in America

9/09/2016

As I prepare for my bike tour in Maine, I have asked seasoned adventurists to share their experiences here on CGR on adventure cycling. Today I am delighted to introduce Kristin McManus of Cloud 9 Living, an experience gift company, who will share some of America's favorite trails from East to West to help you start planning for your next adventure on two wheels.
Cycling is perhaps one of the greatest ways to have an adventure in the great outdoors. There’s something about hopping on your bicycle and feeling the breeze on your skin as you ride. Depending on your skill level and overall adventure style, there’s a cycling adventure out there just for you.

Whether you’re looking for a simple vacation away from home or wondering what to ask for as an anniversary gift from him, a cycling adventure just might be the perfect solution. North America is home to some of the world’s best biking adventure spots including those in Colorado, New Mexico and beyond. Grab your helmet and enjoy some of America’s best bike trails as I share with you a few of our favorites.
Santa Fe, New Mexico
Santa Fe is home to hundreds of acres of beautiful scenery and wildlife. Santa Fe includes some of the world’s best cycling views including the acclaimed Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway. Santa Fe's cycling scenery is mapped especially for those traveling by bike that outline all of the best scenes just for you. Nestled at the base of a mountain, Santa Fe adds culture to sophistication. See New Mexico’s best with a trip to Santa Fe.

San Juan Islands, Washington
If you’re looking for a beautiful Pacific view mixed with some coastal cycling, the San Juan Islands might be the place for you. You might even get lucky to watch Orcas around the islands span of a total of 57 miles of glorious scenery. And if you climb up Mount Constitution, it will be worth it for the view. Make it a vacation and spend some time on the islands at the local resorts and take the ferry to your next destination.

Fredericksburg, Texas
If you’re a nature lover, you will greatly enjoy Fredericksburg. It is known for its beautiful countryside that gives cyclists a breathtaking view of the south. From fields of wildflowers to staying at your favorite Bed and Breakfast, cycling in Texas will be well worth the trip.

Palisade, Colorado
Colorado had to make the list. Colorado is a beautiful place and Palisade is no exception. A 25- mile loop surrounded by the Grand Mesa is a breathtaking ride for cyclists. While you’re at it, you can enjoy the numerous wineries and fruit stands that line the area as far as the eyes can see. Palisade is perfect for a beginner cyclist and the well-seasoned cyclist.

Louisville, Kentucky
Located in the Midwest, Kentucky is home to hundreds of miles of bluegrass. Louisville, being home to one of the most famous bicycle clubs in the United States is home to amazing bike tours and a totally bike friendly atmosphere. Take your bike with you wherever you go in Louisville and be met with arms wide open. It is southern hospitality at its finest in Kentucky.

Cape Cod Rail Trail
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is located in the fabulous Cape Cod area and is considered to be one of the best “car-free” bicycle trails in the North East. It is famous with the locals but also famous with adamant cyclists around the United States. This trail is 22 miles in length and is great for beginners and the well seasoned cyclists.

Erie Canalway Trail
Located in upstate New York, this trail is a ride through some of the world’s most beautiful scenery. The Erie Canalway is on its way to becoming the largest car free trail. You can see the Erie Canal and travel alongside it to meet other canals along the way. This trail is an amazing 114 miles long and is great for all cyclists.

No matter what sort of trip you are looking for, by visiting any one of these wonderful places, you’re in for an amazing cycling adventure. From the mountain of Santa Fe to the peaks of Colorado and back to the bluegrass of Louisville, there are adventures to be had and memories to be made. Visiting one or more of these areas will give you an experience you can share for a lifetime. Make it special for a birthday, anniversary or holiday gift. Grab your bicycle, a bottle of water and your camera and get ready to see the world through a whole new perspective.
